Factors Related to Smoking Cessation and Relapse Among Pregnant Smokers

Objective: To examine sociodemographic characteristics and breastfeeding behaviors related to smoking cessation and relapse among 1,403 pregnant smokers. Methods: Analysis were conducted using data from the "pregnant and Smoking" supplement included in the 1991 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Results: Only 21 (1%) of the pregnant smokers remained quit after the births of their babies. Relapsers were more likely to be older, have a high school education, and less likely to breastfeed their infants.Conclusion: Pregnant smokers are having a difficult time quitting smoking and remaining quuit throughout their pregnancies and postpartum.
