ABSTRACT:
Older, low-income women have been shown to participate in breast
cancer detection practices at a low rate while at greater risk for
morbidity and mortality. PRECEDE allowed organization of 102 potential
predictors of breast self-examination (BSE) in effort to identify
factors which are associated with BSE. Bivariate associations were
calculated. Those highly correlated with frequency and proficiency
were entered into regression equations. Variance explained was 40
and 66%, respectively. Combining models produced a final model with
10 variables that can be incorporated into teaching programs and
clinical encounters to enhance compliance.
