Examination of an Integrated Theoretical Model of Exercise Behavior

Robert Flynn Corwyn MA;
Brent B. Benda PhD

Objective: To identify determinants of participation in vigorous exercise among 18 to 39 year old persons, 40 to 59 year old persons, and persons 60 and over. Methods: Secondary analysis of a large survey containing elements from the Health Belief Model and its suggested refinements. Multiple regression was used to identify the relative influence demographic and theoretical factors have on vigorous exercise behavior among each age-group separately. Results: Both similarities and differences were found in the predictors of vigorous exercise across the 3 age-groups. Conclusion: Strategies designed to promote physical activity should consider age.
