Objective: To determine validity and reliability of an instrument and to elicit information regarding tobacco attitudes, behaviors, and knowledge. Methods: Instrument used in this study was reviewed by expert panel, checked for internal consistency, and pilot tested on 455 fourth graders. Results: Internal consistency for knowledge (.679), attitude (.764), and behavior (.693). Correlations were significant (.001) between knowledge and behavior (.559), attitude and behavior (.552), and knowledge and behavior (.276). Knowledge, attitude, and behavior differed significantly by gender. Conclusion: The instrument is comprehensive (75+ line items) and effective in eliciting tobacco-specific information from fourth graders.
